And he made me go to the dictionary with this quote:

"The only thing that's consistent about my shows is that I don't work with a set list, the set sort of drifts around in a way. And I like doing that, it seems to work. There's a certain sort of shambolicness about my approach. It doesn't mean that I don't care about it, it just means that I like not knowing what I'm doing, 'cause it keeps me on my toes," he explained.

Chris has a new project and it's for a great cause.

I have, along with Kevin Malpass been working on a Christmas single in conjunction with the BBC’s One Show. Next week between 7 and 7.30 pm Monday to Friday you will see the story of our song. Please join us on our journey as we try to make this single a hit. It will be a download only track and the details of this will follow shortly. I always dreamt of being on Top Of the Pops at Christmas, I'm sure it wont happen, but we can have fun trying. And, make some money for Children in Need. Pass this on to as many people as you can so that when the download comes we can all suck it down from the internet and make this Christmas a bit of fun. If we do get on the tele around turkey time, you can all come round to my house for a mince pie!

There's also a facebook page for those of us who are young and hip and on facebook. (Or it least in denial about our age.)

Chris himself has a facebook page as well, by the way.

Yours truly has been sat in the corner of squeezereader towers sniffling and sneezing all week.

"Achoo!"

Frank, my faithful newshound has been bringing me cups of Lemsip and a fresh box of tissues on the hour.
The rain is beating down hard onto the windows and the world looks grey and uninviting until...

"Woof!"

Frank's tail sticks up and he bounds across the room with the graceful poise of a bull in a china shop. Chairs and desks part company while pot plants crash down and with a big bump! all the Chocolate bars from the vending machine scatter across the floor.

With one big bound for a dog and one giant step for squeezefans everywhere, Frank lands on my lap and waves an email at me.

Wowzers! Squeeze are going to be making an appearance at Chris Difford's benefit concert!

Hugging Frank I take a swig of my Lemsip and smile. Those grey rain-filled clouds don't look so bad after all!

Chris Difford's Benefit Concert takes place at The Albany Arts Venue, Deptford on Sunday May 4. Doors open 7:30pm and the show starts at 8pm.

Whilst taking Frank, my faithful newshound, out for a walk around squeezereader towers, something extraordinary happened.

There we were strolling around the opulent surroundings of our orchard when Frank's nose started twitching.
"Hmmm", I thought, "Frank can smell something Squeezy in the air"

We carried on walking, when suddenly Frank jumped up and caught an object in his mouth.
On further inspection I was delighted to see that he had indeed caught something interesting.

On unfurling the exciting find, I was delighted to see the brand spanking new design of Chris Difford's website- very nice :0)

Squeeze on talkSPORT radio - rescheduled

So there I was...

Sat at squeeze reader towers with my little radio listening to talkSPORT and waiting for the airwaves to be lit up with the delights of Messrs Difford & Tilbrook.

As I did my morning rounds of tidying the desks, watering the pop plants and topping up the water cooler with gin, I heard the presenter say "Squeeze" and ran to my radio.

Unfortunately my moment of happiness was short-lived as Jon Gaunt announced that he won't be playing the interview today as he wanted to carry on taking calls.

With a sigh, I walked over to the water cooler, filled up my mug and went back to my desk.

However every cloud has a silver lining, and some good did come out of this...
... while I browsed the talkSPORT website, I saw a "Listen Live" link which will enable overseas fans to hear the interview when it gets played out next week :0)

For now, I'll have a listen back to the show to make sure none of the session tracks were played when I nipped out for a Twix bar.

Squeeze on UK Radio- Nov 23

It's a wet, wet, wet day here at squeeze reader towers...

Frank, my faithful newshound is lying in his basket and dreaming of unearthing the world's biggest bone, while yours truly is playing solitaire on her computer.

All of a sudden Frank's ears pop up and he bounds over to my inbox.
Within seconds he has presented me with the soggy remnants of an email (and a pen which I've been searching for since last Tuesday!)

The lovely Jeanine from the Glenn_list alerts us to two, YES TWO!, Squeeze appearances on UK Radio tomorrow...

Squeeze are doing a session on the Mark Lamarr show at midnight on BBC
Radio 2 this Friday 23 November.
Glenn and Chris are doing an acoustic performance and interview which
will also transmit this Friday 23rd on Jon Gaunt's show on talkSPORT.
His show airs from 10am - 1 pm.

Sorry for the delay in posts, readers! Things have been busy at work, and as that pays slightly more than blogging about Squeeze (at least for the moment), I had to pay attention.

Anyway, Jonathan Ross promises "music from Squeeze" on his radio show in a few hours. It's on BBC Radio 2 from 1000 to 1300 hours (or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.). I'm thinking that may mean live in the studio? But I could be wrong.

Cancer survivors and co founders of the Love Hope Strength Foundation (LHSF) Mike Peters and James Chippendale will lead 40 musicians, cancer survivors and mountaineers to Base Camp to perform an acoustic concert to help the Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital build the infrastructure of its clinic, NCRS, by providing them with much needed equipment and funding. In a country where the Avg. annual income is $300 a year our donation and support is going a long way to save lives NOW."

So, on my monitor at work are a few bits of paper, taped to the side. A bit of Pushkin I read and liked, a couple of extensions I'm always dialing, my to-do list, and my New Year's resolutions. One of my resolutions was to post to Squeezereader more, but things have gotten into the way. Now, I'm shoving the obstructions to the side and am going to try and keep up the resolutions again.

So, here's a story about Glenn getting high.

Undercover: Glenn Tilbrook Gets High

A rock star getting high is hardly big news, but Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook is doing it for real.

Tilbrook, and a number of other musicians, will climb Mt Everest next month and perform the highest concert in history.

Tilbrook's fellow "rock" stars are Mike Peters of The Alarm, Slim Jim Phantom of Stray Cats, Cy Curnin and Jamie West-Oram from The Fixx and Nick Harper.

Together, they plan to do the gig at some stage next month. Tilbrook will leave for Katmandu on October 10 and return to the UK on October 30.

The show is to benefit cancer and leukemia sufferers all over the world.

Sounds like a hell of a show. Someone tape it and put it on youtube please.

Jools' memoirs

Is there enough Jools Holland in your life? Well, you can get even more in his memoir that's coming out next month. I would be surprised if the Squeeze part of it were very long, or the most interesting part of the book, given the kind of unique brand of television personality he is. In fact, I can't really think of a modern equivalent --- if anyone can think of one, feel free to let me know. The first link was to Amazon.co.uk, from which we get not a penny. There is an announcement in the Bexley Times, but it's not much more than the Amazon.co.uk blurb anyway....

Imagine my panic when I read the headline on the BBC London site...

"... Squeezing out Sparks"?!!!

What on earth could have happened to the delightful Ron and Russell Mael?

I was about to launch an expedition to make sure that the electro-pioneers were safe and well, when I read the first paragraph:

" As English as they come and Londoners to boot: Lord Crowley meets songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook..."

Phew! That was a close one!

So imagine my delight to find that you can also watch Chris & Glenn chat to Lord Gary of Crowley (plus hear a bit of an acoustic take on 'Take Me I'm Yours').

The interview is from a couple of years back when Messrs Difford and Tilbrook were promoting their 'Song By Song' book at Borders.

I whooped a cry of happiness, put on my headphones and whipped out my copy Jim Drury's excellent 'Squeeze: Song By Song' book.

Mountain Winery Review & Setlist

A Bit Of A Mountain Whinery!

It's near the end of the late shift here at Squeeze Reader Towers (UK).

As I sit looking out at the starry sky, I'm just about to power down my computer, when I hear a "ding!"

YES! We have some Squeeze news neatly landing in my inbox!

Lovely Squeeze Reader Chris Baker, has sent in a link to a review of the Mountain Winery Show:

"Without Holland or Carrack around, Tilbrook was unquestionably the star of the show, and his guitar solos showed the same melodic verve as his vocals. During the closing “Black Coffee in Bed,” he was effusive in his excitement about the show and the entire tour, pointing out that five years ago he and Difford were more likely to be involved in a knife fight than to share a stage. But on this night, anyway, there was a lot of love going around."

The review seems more preoccupied with the ex-Squeeze members who weren't there... and (even though I was on the other side of the big pond), to say this about Chris Difford's singing:

"...rather monotonal vocals were nothing exceptional"

does deserve a big slap in the mouth with a well-oiled croissant.

At least the review credited Stephen 'Lord' Large as "versatile...making a good impression" and said that Squeeze (and their support band) Fountains Of Wayne, were "... simply about songs, and the two bands delivered enough tasty pop to satisfy any musical sweet tooth"

It's a rainy day here at Squeeze Reader Towers...

The sun was nowhere to be seen, so I packed away the picnic hamper and with a heavy sigh retreived the hammock that once hanged happily between the two apple trees in the Squeeze Reader Garden.

Time to go back to the office...

Sitting in the opulent surroundings of Squeeze Reader Towers, I sipped at a nice cup of green tea and nibbled on a lightly buttered scone.

Then all of a sudden, the sun shone through the window and lit up my computer screen.

Putting down my scone, I glanced at my inbox to discover that there was a new Squeeze Forum on the web!

"Hurrah!", I gleefully shouted, and took a big bite of my scone.
And guess what? This scone tasted all the better for it.

Squeeze vs. The Police, a steel cage match!

Well, not quite. But a guy at the Huffington Post is very pointed in his assessment of Squeeze vs. The Police. I'm sure you all would guess where I would fall in this category.

My iPod seems to like the Police, despite my own tastes. I only have about one-quarter their greatest hits album on there, and in random shuffle often I have to skip through two of their songs to get to a band that I want to hear. (Why, yes, I do program my own iPod. But if I can't skip through songs occasionally, I don't feel like I'm really listening.)

Also, I gotta wonder about some of those commenters on that site. What was that one guy's point, that he likes Soundgarden? Non sequitur much? Maybe he just likes to drop in conversation that he likes Chris Cornell just kind of randomly. Sheesh.

Squeeze in a Roundup

Not a round up of Squeeze (sorry, this week has been busy preparing for next week's trip to the Bay Area to see Squeeze), but Squeeze got included in the San Jose-area's Metro includes them in a round-up:

Squeeze: BACK IN the '70s, an English band called Squeeze eked out a little niche somewhere between the New Wave pop rock of Elvis Costello and the British synth-pop of the Human League, but ironically scored their biggest with the comparatively earthy and soulful "Tempted." Founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook put the show back on the road, employing the help of longtime bassist John Bentley and other members of Tilbrook's touring band. Is it just the former-academic-publishing-company-worker in me that finds it funny that the marriage of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, country singers also mentioned in that round-up, means that they are the McGraw-Hills?

The paper that Tony Soprano takes liked the show at the Nokia Theatre, and promote the show that will in Atlantic City tonight. (Or maybe it's just the paper's blog? I can't tell from this.)

Not sure if the reviewer interviewed Glenn or not, or if Glenn said this as part of his stage patter:

"We haven't played any new songs tonight, because, well, there aren't any," said Tilbrook, no doubt a bit sensitive since he declared in 2004 that a tour without new songs is the "kiss of death."

He said that? Maybe I'm just getting old, but I don't remember that!
Anyway, the Star-Ledger continues:

But along with pitch-perfect renditions of such staples as "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" and "Hourglass," the band pulled out the more obscure "I Think I'm Go Go," roared through the power-pop of "Trust Me to Open My Mouth" and added a break to the new-wave drollery of "Cool for Cats" that was almost funky.

Newsday is a daily paper in New York, and this excellent interview has the best little summary of the life of Squeeze:

Mates in a band can be friends or they can be successful, and sometimes they can be both. Sometimes, they can't. For example, they can be Squeeze.

This is actually a really well-written little advance write-up of the New York shows, with some hearfelt words from Tilbrook, who declines to rule out a real reunion (at least, songwriter-wise). Check the article out.

On occasion the band strayed from its Beatles template with mixed results. Some arty, spacey patches lost the crowd, but Tilbrook’s tight rockabilly and blues guitar licks brought them back mid-set. Difford and Tilbrook reform as Squeeze

From Boston Now:

First they were friends, then they were band mates, then the band broke up and they stopped talking to each other altogether.

It's a simplistic way of looking at it, but that's how Glenn Tilbrook sums up his relationship with Chris Difford and the 80s hit-making machine they fronted, Squeeze.

Or at least that was his take on things before he started working with music journalist Jim Drury on a retrospective book on the band's career called Squeeze: Song by Song.

"I think I learned more about Chris from reading that book than I did in knowing him for 27 years," Tilbrook said. "So it started with getting to know each other again and eventually that led us to see if we wanted to play music together again."

Instead of heading into the studio to try and make new music, the pair got together with some of the musicians from their past and started playing the songs that made Squeeze a staple of the FM dial for so many years.

"The first time we actually saw each other in years was at a photo shoot for a best of CD they're putting out in the UK, which was a little embarrassing," he said. "Once we got into the rehearsal space and started playing, though, it all fell back into place pretty quickly."

While both Tilbrook and Difford have put together strong solo careers in the years since Squeeze officially broke up (1999), neither of them wanted to bring any of that material to the table for the current tour. "One of the things that's happened since we broke up is a lot of young musicians are telling us what a big influence we were on their music, which is great because it shows us what we write has stood up for itself over the years," he said. "So why not play it for the fans."

Squeeze play the Cape Cod Melody Tent tonight and the Bank of America Pavilion tomorrow.

The Baltimore City Paper points out that it's a Squeezey week in Maryland, with a show at Pier Six on Aug. 8 and a showing of One for the Road at Gardel's on Aug. 2, complete with a talk by director Amy Pickard and a costume party. Is someone going to show up as Glenn with the long-flowing locks?

Raves over Guilfest

I'm more than a week late on this (sorry!) but the reviewer for something called In The News raved over Squeeze's headline appearance at Guilfest.

A shout out to our reader who was looking for set lists --- this probably isn't a set list but the reviewer listed many of the songs played that night, possibly in order!

(And I'm quoting from the middle here, because I try to avoid printing entire articles. The reviewer also has some nice words to say about Messed Around and Up The Junction, and not so nice words about Cool For Cats.)

This was Squeeze's party and everyone was invited to revel in the emotional one-two delivered by Some Fantastic Place and Goodbye Girl; the anthemic Mussels In A Shell and the electronica meets honkytonk of Slap And Tickle; a knockabout version of Slightly Drunk swung into the euphoric Tempted which was met with a roar of approval from the crowd.

Ents24.com also has a slightly muted rave, compared to the above review, but ultimately proclaims the return as triumphant.

If this is what the U.S. has to look forward to, I'm now officially excited! (As if I hadn't been before.)

The Phoenix promos Squeeze

Nice little article in the Phoenix before the shows at the Bank of America Pavilion in Boston and the Melody Tent in Cape Cod.

Heroin addiction, alcoholism, neurosis, friends at each others’ throats . . . all the things you’d expect to encounter in a film about Metallica. But in the story of a generally cheerful pop group like Squeeze?

You gotta respect a writer that read the whole biography (or at least, can fake it well), but cheerful pop group? A quick glance at Singles 45 and Under (OK, I admit, I don't actually own this compilation and I had to fake this one by looking up the track list) has: a con artist, pregnancy and poverty, heartbreak (twice!), temptation and loneliness. Hm, and that's before we get to the second half. Actually, all those things mentioned in the part quoted above eventually become subjects of their songs. Had I time, I'd atually match the trouble with the song....
The Cape Cod Times also weighs in with a long interview, which also features Difford naming who he thinks are the best lyricists of his pop era.

Ah... the word from Quixotic Records and NME (among others) is that the Truck festival in Oxfordshire--- where Glenn and his band (I presume the Fluffers) were scheduled to perform--- got rained out and cancelled. Ah, well. Hope everyone is indoors and keeping dry....

It seems that Glenn Tilbrook is a busy man. The Oxfordshire Truck festival lists Glenn as a performer on the mainstage on Sunday night. However, it's not listed on Quixotic's list of gigs, and it's not on his Myspace page, so we'll find out if that's really true.

Also, according to Glenn's Myspace page, it looks like he and the Fluffers will be performing two dates at the V Festival on Aug. 18 and 19, which is less than a week after Squeeze's last show in the U.S. I'm a little bit unclear on the concept of this festival, except that it seems to involve camping and it lists two locations. Hm.

Chris Difford spoke with the Associated Press about the upcoming American tour. Read his thoughts on the failed VH1 reality show, giving away solo CDs, and the "boxing ring of silence."

I wonder if the Essential CDs and DVDs will be available for purchase at the shows? I think it would make a lot of sense, but since when did everything in Squeeze history have to make a lot of sense?

Also, I forgot to list their first American show! Not that it matters, because it's sold out (and according to an anonymous commenter (hi!) it sold out in two hours). They start their tour in the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH. That is going to be one busy two weeks. Wow.

It's great having a surf through the old internet, and ending up on a beach soaked full of Squeeze news!

As the lyric-writing half of the creative duo in pop group supreme Squeeze, Chris Difford has established his credentials as an authority on songwriting. That's why many don't consider it sacrilege to mention his and collaborator Glenn Tilbrook's names among the great English songwriting pairs such as Lennon and McCartney. Little wonder that fans of superior song craftsmanship are making Squeeze's upcoming tour one of the most anticipated reunion treks of the year. Difford gave Spinner some insight into what he might be listening to on the road via his examples of what makes good music.

1. The Beatles: Some of the first music I ever heard was the Beatles, growing up. And when I listen to 'With The Beatles' it just reminds me of getting ready for school in the morning and putting that record on the record player while I was getting ready and just feeling totally at home.

2. XTC: When I first heard them, I thought they were very deliberately complicated. But now when I listen to it I realize I don't think they're being complicated; they were just being themselves, which is a very honest way of making music.

3. Jellyfish: I was in Los Angeles making the Squeeze album 'Play' and that's when I got introduced to their music. What I really enjoyed about it was it looks into English music in a way I've never seen an American band do. They'd obviously been inspired by English pop music like 10cc and Queen.

4. The Feeling: They do a really amazing job of taking musical history and modernizing it, really. They're sort of lovingly reconstructing great songs.

5. Feist: Any track from the Feist album would be a good introduction for people to appreciate really well-constructed pop music. If somebody arrived on a spaceship and they said to me they wanted to hear something that was recent that conjured up what was good about writing songs, I think I would play them the Feist album.

... And I must say that they certainly are great choices :0)

Original Squeeze members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook took everyone by surprise earlier this year, when they announced that they were getting back together and heading off on tour. But first, they'll be headlining the BBC Radio 2 Stage at this year's GuilFest on Saturday 14th July. Meg Rowell spoke to Chris ahead of their appearance.

It's not been all that long since Squeeze decided to get back together, how's it all going?

Well, since we decided to get back together, Glenn's been in Australia and we haven't really seen each other! He's back this week, but I'm in Italy and back next week, so - I think it's going to be fine! I think it's going to be wonderful in fact.

I guess you haven't had much of a chance to rehearse together then?

No, nothing at all! We're just talking about who's going to be in the band, setting up rehearsals and warm-up shows, you know getting the technicians together for the tour...but it's all very exciting news for us.

Was getting back together a tough decision to make, or a natural progression for you both?

It was a natural progression really, brought on by the release of our greatest hits album (The Essential Squeeze) by Universal, who decided that they'd spend this year re-releasing our back catalogue and we thought, well, we've got a break in our calendars as solo artists, so we thought we'd come out and support our history, which is essentially what we're doing.

You're headlining GuilFest this year, are you looking forward to it?

Yeah, I've never been to GuilFest, I've been to most other festivals but it's one I've not been to, though it's very close to me so yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.

It will be the first time you've performed together, as Squeeze, since 1998, it must be quite exciting?

Yeah, it is, it's going to be great - I'm saving up for an electric guitar as we speak!

You say that you and Glenn haven't had a chance to spend much time together, but do you think the chemistry will be the same between you both?

I have every reason to believe that it will be, you know, we grew up together, we've been friends for 26, 27 years or whatever it is. I think it's like getting back on a horse - you remember how to put your feet in the stirrups once you're up there.

Glenn played a solo slot at last year's GuilFest. Has he given you any tips?

As I say, I really haven't had a chance to talk to him, but a friend of mine went to see him last year and said the audience were amazing, so I'm really looking forward to it. I hear it's a real family kind of show - which suits me down to the ground.

There are some great bands on the line up this year - is there anyone you're particularly looking forward to?

I'd like to know who are playing! I know Madness are playing and Supergrass, who I'd love to see, but I haven't been told about anyone else yet!

Well, there's The Magic Numbers, The Ordinary Boys, Richard Thompson, Saw Doctors...

Oh wow! Excellent! I'll be up all night!

So, can we expect all the old classics from Squeeze, or have you got some new material up your sleeves?

It'll be wall-to-wall classics, I promise.

As you said, you're about to release The Essential Squeeze album; it must be satisfying to be able to collect together, and look back at everything you've achieved over the years.

It is. It's very warming to understand the kind of history that we've had together, it's quite something when you reach a certain age and you can look back and reflect on your life and feel very proud of it, so yeah, I'm very fond of what we have.

And then you're off on the Quintessential Tour this November...

Yeah, we're doing some dates at the end of the year, again to support the Essential Squeeze package, we've also got an American tour that we're doing, so it's going to be a busy year one way or another. I'm working on my solo album, Glenn's working on his, so we're very busy boys.

GuilFest has a reputation for nurturing young talent, and always has a lot of up-and-coming bands on its bill - do you have any advice to offer them?

Keep in tune and stay off the acid! No, I think a young band just has to enjoy the moment really. I don't think many people are that paranoid about doing shows anymore. When I was young, it used to terrify me, but I think younger people are more cool about what they do now, so my advice is just to enjoy it.

No, yours truly hasn't been at the wine, but thanks to an eagle-eyed member of the Glenn_list, I am thrilled to report that Messrs. Difford and Tilbrook played live at the 'Return To The Summer Of Love Festival' last Saturday!

The dashing duo were unbilled, but gave everyone a thrill as they took to the stage and played Take Me I'm Yours, Pulling Mussels (From The Shell), Is That Love?, Tempted, Labelled With Love, Cool For Cats and Up The Junction.

I hope you can feel the excitement as I type! (As there is indeed more!)

Universal vs. Apple: any implications for Squeeze?

I really don't know. Can someone answer that question for me?

So, Universal Music Group is threatening to end its contract with Apple's iTunes. The article mentions that groups on iTunes include Amy Winehouse and U2, but I also believe that many of Squeeze's albums are part of this group? If they don't come to an agreement, that music could just disappear from iTunes one of these days.

It's hard to remember as a consumer sometimes that iTunes has come about through a complicated mish-mash of lawyers arguing over royalties and rights, which is constantly shifting. After I thought I lost all of my iTunes purchases after a hard drive crash (back up often, folks), I was chagrined to discover that the single version of the song "Gangsters" by The Specials is not available. (I had it on my iPod, so I was able to not lose it.) I see that the CD has gone out of print, but I'm not really sure why that should affect its status on iTunes, since it doesn't take up much physical space.

However, it's not as if there's a ton of Squeeze music on (American) iTunes --- just East Side Story, Domino and a couple of greatest hits packages. Score 1 for CDs (and used record shops), I guess.

Correction: there are 12 cities in 14 days. They are also playing the Wolf Trap Filene Theatre in Vienna, Virginia, which didn't come up through Ticketmaster. Shouldn't have missed that one, because at $25 to $42 a pop, it's among the best priced shows on the tour.

And for all my whining about the ticket prices earlier (and I wasn't whining, I was just surprised), I'm actually glad that Chris and Glenn can ask for adult prices at this stage in their careers.

I just took a listen to podcaster Rockin' Rich Lynch's interview of Chris Difford on the monthly Kweevak Radio Show. They talk about the reunion tour, the VH1 ambush from a few years back and the future of Squeeze:

I kind of see it as I'm going to be in a Broadway play for a month. We've 26 shows to do. At the end, if it gets an extended run, great. If it doesn't I'm going back to my normal job of serving tables.

Whoo! Sorry haven't blogged in a while. Got a little catching up to do, and I hope that all of you who are able were able to get tickets to the summer U.S. tour.

I have no idea what this title I just wrote means, but I can't think of another way to describe the article in Billboard magazine. We learn that 1) the reunion tour really is a one-off tour, and 2) it's gonna be a proper show with lights and everything (the likes of which we perhaps saw in A Round and A Bout, maybe?) 3) they wanted Gilson on the tour but he's busy with Jools' band, 4) still no plans for U.S. release of "Essential Squeeze." There's more stuff I didn't mention, so take a peek at the article.

Wow. Looks like I got tickets for the last show, and at a winery to boot. That ought to be fun. I wonder if this gives Glenn any time to train to tackle Mt. Everest by October (or at least the trail leading up to base camp?).

The press release goes on to say that 1) Essential Squeeze is due out only in the UK at the moment, and 2) that The Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight (who?), and Lily Allen all cite Squeeze as influences. Has the Squeeze Reader ever mentioned the rest of the band? For the record: John Bentley on bass, Stephen 'Lord' Large on keyboards and Simon Hanson on drums.

"FROM 1974 to 1999, Squeeze were one the longest-running and most beloved bands on the British rock circuit with hits including Cool For Cats, Up The Junction, Hourglass and If It's Love.

Now singer Glenn Tilbrook and lyricist Chris Difford have put past differences behind them to reform

Here they chat about their upcoming tour, reveal why they get on better when they're apart and give their tips on getting girls to strip off.

What led to your decision to reform Squeeze after all this time?

Glenn - Mainly the fact that Universal are re-releasing all of our back catalogue, which we've been on at them to do for years.

Squeeze have become a legendary band without ever achieving legendary sales.

Acts like The View, Lily Allen, Jamie T and Razorlight are saying we've influenced them, it's happening more now than at any time in our careers.

So I hope that younger people now discover lots of songs and albums of ours - as there's lots of mileage in records that we are very proud of.

Plus we're getting paid much more now than we ever got paid before!

Which is the one Squeeze album you'd recommend everyone should have when they are re-released?

Glenn - Some Fantastic Place is a really strong album.

Chris - For people discovering us through bands like The View, I would say Argybargy because of the enthusiasm of that record.

I played a gig for what I was told was an 'NME crowd' recently and I was terrified. But all these 19 and 20-year-olds knew all the words.

I was astounded - they were like my children. Well not literally my children…

Glenn - Well, you have been in the business a long time. You've met a lot of ladies!

When you first formed did you ever think teenagers 30 years later would be singing your songs?

Glenn - We never thought that, but I did think we'd be successful and was surprised we weren't more successful. Then I grew up a bit!

I've always had tons of confidence and blind faith and that's stood us in good stead.

Are you looking forward to playing together again?

Chris - Definitely. The last time we played shows as Squeeze was back in 1998. So we've got a lot of practice to do before our tour in November and festival appearances this summer.

Glenn - Chris and I didn't get on for a long time and I think it's fair to say there was a lot of bitterness when we broke up, on my side at least.

But that's all gone away now and not playing together actually saw our friendship enhanced.

We get on better now than any time from when we first met.

Jools Holland was your keyboard player for quite a few years - will he playing with you on tour?

Glenn - Not so far as I know. His touring schedule completely clashes with ours.

What are your favourite memories of being in Squeeze?

Chris - I wish I could remember what it was like to be on stage at places like Maddison Square Garden, but I can't as it's diluted in my memory somewhere.

This time around I am hoping to enjoy doing all that stuff and remember it.

Glenn - I just keep on thinking of really stupid things.

I think it's probably when I first met Neil Finn of Split Endz and Crowded House, and he told me a good way to get a girl to take her clothes off was to run a shower in your room and put a towel down so the whole room steams up.

Finally - what are your hopes for the future?

Both - To steam up as many rooms as possible!"

Forever searching for Difford & Tilbrook goodies, the good ship 'squeeze reader' has been trawling through the cyberspace sea... and from the shores of Australia, we dug this out of our net!...

Once a rock star, Glenn Tilbrook is now king of the road
(but not the middle).

GT talks to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The high life of a rock'n'roller, we know it well: the glamour of first-class travel and accommodation, the firm young things at your fingertips, the primping and preening of dozens of minions before your every public appearance.

And when you've been playing music publicly for 34 years, when you've had Top 10 hits on three continents, when your former, long-time songwriting partnership was described as the best Britain had produced since Lennon and McCartney, well that's the life you'd be living wouldn't it, Glenn Tilbrook?

Not exactly, no. These days Tilbrook, for two decades one half of the partnership, with lyricist Chris Difford, behind pop gems for the band Squeeze ( Tempted, Up The Junction, Pulling Mussels, Cool For Cats) prefers to do his touring in what could kindly be called a mobile home, or less kindly a glorified caravan.

He does it regularly around the United States and Europe and this month the Londoner is driving up and down the east coast of Australia with partner and children, stopping occasionally to play a show or two. Sheesh, where's the glamour in that?

"I've had the make-up person, I've had the wardrobe person and all that stuff. On one level that's great but the basic way of touring is very down-to-earth and it reconnects me to why I first started playing music," Tilbrook says. "Once Squeeze turned professional and started being successful, I lost touch with that. In the early '90s, when Chris and I were still together, I started doing gigs by myself and I re-found that other thing and now it's my solo career. It has taken over and I don't mind. I'm 49 and I'm enjoying it."

This way of life is also a straightforward way of accepting your place in the world when you're no longer this month's hot act but you have an audience and you want to play. Nonetheless, the unpretentious nature of the touring reflects the way Tilbrook performs. His relaxed, story-filled and often hilarious shows not only have familiar song after familiar song, they also embrace the audience in the kind of bonhomie which transforms venues into Tilbrook's living room.

"You can't change that; that's the way I am and I feel lucky for it," he says. "I definitely think some of the people who could be in my position, who were more successful in the past, could do what I do but they feel a certain amount of professional pride. I don't think that way."

All this makes more sense, too, when you realise that even at the height of Squeeze's fame - and when they were big they were selling out arenas across the US - the flash suits and fancy hairdos were never really Tilbrook's style.

Squeeze are reforming for the first time in eight years for a UK tour, and are releasing an album of their greatest hits.

The London band, which formed in 1974, chalked up a string of hit singles in the late '70s and early '80s, including Up the Junction, Cool For Cats and Black Coffee In Bed.

In 1982 Squeeze split up, but returned with a variety of line-ups before stalwarts Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook played the band's final gig in 1999 and launched solo projects.

Difford, who is reuniting with Tilbrook for the revival, discusses returning to the band and his quest for old footage of Squeeze.

Are you getting back together for the love of it?

Universal approached us and said we'd be foolish to miss this window, as they were pushing the boat out to promote the album. Glenn and I didn't plan it this year as we had solo plans.

But we've downed tools, we are getting the band together and we are going to do it. Squeeze has been our lives, so it's important that we show people we care.

Are you prepared for working together as a band again?

I'm looking forward to it - I've been saving up for an electric guitar as I haven't had one for years. I think it's going to be good as it's 24 shows, so you can plot how it's going to work.

Is there a possibility of a full-scale reunion on the back of your tour?

To make another Squeeze record we'd have to take six months out of our solo careers and neither of us can afford to stop at the moment. It's like we're "courting" again, showing each other our feathers. I'd love to write lyrics for Glenn again - he's one of the most inspirational people I've ever written for.

Do you prefer being a solo artist or a member of a band?

Being on my own is like being a skipper of a small yacht - Squeeze is like an ocean liner.

Have you been putting in any extra training for the tour?

I'll have to go to the gym as I don't want to be seen as an old man. I probably won't be jumping around on stage, but I'm hoping to embarrass my children as much as I can.

Are you in tune with the rapidly-changing music business, including downloading and the new chart?

My homepage is the BBC News entertainment site, so I get a lot of information from there. I can keep up with the charts from the comfort of my living room too. I don't look to see where my records have charted, but I'm always on the hunt for Squeeze videos I've never seen.

What are your long-term plans after the Squeeze tour?

My solo album is out next year and I'm working on the new Squeeze musical - we had one back in 1984 which was called Labelled With Love.

Essential Squeeze is released in the UK on 30 April. The band will embark on their reunion tour in November.

A difficult choice

Over at myspace.com/squeezeofficial they're running a little poll.

What are the five best Squeeze songs?

That's tough. It's like asking what are the five best glasses of wine you've had in your life? I've had so many good ones....

But I like this sort of game, so let's play.

Two are easy for me:

Up The Junction - Hands down, one of the best songs ever written. It's got a story, it's got some wicked images in the lyric, and the music complements it so completely.

Maidstone - The hidden gem of pop music. A throw-away B-side (note to kids: We used to buy small vinyl records that played on a turntable. They had one song on each side, the "single" and the "B-side.") that should never have been thrown away. It combines the best of Difford and Tilbrook: a fistful of chords that drags you into a story, a wistful lyric about young love, and a sense of place. We're so lucky this has been on best-of compilations. It could have been lost forever.

The next three are harder to pick. They're probably more dependent on my background with Squeeze's music.

Another Nail In My Heart - It's New Wave, it's got the octave-apart vocals thing, it's got the country music drunk and lost love thing, it's got Jools playing every key on the piano, how can one group cram so much into one song? They do. Amazing. I remember spinning the Argybargy album, wondering whether the Gs were hard or soft, and listening to this song and knowing that my life was going to be different because of it.

Labelled With Love - It's hard to believe some guys from London could write one of the best country songs ever, but they did. And they didn't even mean to. Chris wrote the lyric, passed it to Glenn, and for some reason he put it to some old honky-tonk--type tune. Love, loss, and drunkenness: you can't go wrong those as your themes.

Electric Trains - For every Squeeze fan, I think what we really want is to be Chris Difford's friend. Really. He writes such interesting words, he must be the most interesting person to sit down and chat with. What he's been through and where he's going just fascinate me.

So Chris lets us in a little to his life and see some of his childhood. It's got the octave-apart thing. A piercingly personal lyric. Soaring music. I could listen to it every day for a million years and not get tired of it.

Anyway, so there you go. Those are my five, what are yours?

Erm... yeah!

Anyway Mr Difford features in an online article that talks about those lyrics that you'd quite happily throw in the nearest river (weighted down and padlocked in a safe for good measure!)

I'd Like To Teach The World To Cringe (The Times)

A snippet:
"Squeeze’s Chris Difford knows a thing or two about separating good lyrics from bad. Revered by Lily Allen and Jamie T for Up the Junction and Pulling Mussels (From the Shell) , Difford has also hosted a string of songwriting get-togethers that have attracted the likes of Cathy Dennis and Suggs. “There’s a difference between choosing a bad lyric and a bad melody,” Difford argues. “I think most of us would agree what constitutes a poor tune and, as a result, they tend not to stick in the mind too long. But a lot of good tunes with bad lyrics end up becoming successful.”

Difford couldn’t possibly be pushed to name examples. Oh, all right then, just a couple. He endeavours to keep a straight face when a couple of Sting clunkers are thrown his way, in particular the Police’s Don’t Stand so Close to Me : “He starts to shake and cough/ Just like the old man in/ That book by Nabokov.”

“Well, it’s very Sting, isn’t it?” smiles Difford. “He’s not always the greatest lyricist — although, in fairness, you can’t knock a song like Message in a Bottle ."

tilbrook to be on top of the world?

Or pretty close there. Billboard reports that Glenn is set to attempt a climb on Mt. Everest, with Nick Harper no less, for a cancer charity:

The event also served as a precursor to another major trek for the Love Hope Strength Foundation. On Oct. 9, several other musicians -- including Squeeze's Glen Tilbrook and English songwriter Nick Harper -- will attempt to climb Mount Everest. The journey will be filmed for a VH1/MTV special and a BBC prime-time documentary.

Could that possibly be true? I checked out the Love, Hope, Strength Web site and they confirm that Glenn has confirmed to be one of 45 musicians who will make a 12-day trek to the base camp at Everest and then perform a concert there. How awesome. It will be filmed for VH-1 and BBC. According to that site, here are the acts:

Well, I finally got my tickets to the Saratoga show at the Mountain Winery. I had to wait until I knew I could afford them. Then I bought floor tickets because, though I am still at an age where I have to worry about being able to afford concert tickets in another state, I also am old enough to want a back on my chair. I don't even know if I have that day off work, but that is a minor detail that will take care of itself.

But, holy crap. I'm going to see Squeeze. I can't believe it.

I knew they wouldn't ship Chris and Glenn all the way to America without adding more dates to the Saratoga show. Ticketmaster is showing at the very least, a week-long bi-coastal Squeeze tour with four dates. Woohoo!

Song07, a new festival featuring some of the finest singer songwriting musicians, taking place in the Pennine hills at Honley Showground, Thurstonland Road, Farnley Moor, Farnley Tyas, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire over the weekend of Saturday 28th to Sunday 29th July 2007, has confirmed a number of acts for the weekend.

A mere month ago, Chris Difford told the The Independent that he and Glenn Tilbrook declined a reunion show in San Francisco that offered the "more money for one show than Glenn and I could probably make now in two years." Obviously, there's been a change of heart for this British tour, and the blog world has spoken:

A whole mailbag* of Jools news has been emptied onto my desk here at Squeezereader Towers!

*Ok, it's just the three stories... but that doesn't sound showbiz enough!

Firstly, the Lowestoft Journal reports that:

"RHYTHM and blues legend, Jools Holland is the latest musician to be added to a spectacular line up of outdoor concerts being held across the region this summer.

The musician will play a one-off gig with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and special guest Lulu at the Somerleyton Estate, near Lowestoft, on Saturday, August 11."

The record, produced by Marius De Vries and Tris Penna, features guest appearances by Jools Holland and Antony Hegarty of Antony And The Johnsons. Almond also duets with St. Etienne's Sarah Cracknell on the Dusty Springfield number, "I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten."

Glenn's in a land down under!

As you know, the Australian leg of Glenn's tour kicks off on March 30th!

He talks to The Age about reconnecting with people, being a one man spontaneous pop jukebox and gives the brilliant Squeezed tribute band a namecheck :0)
