From the vaults: Watch Chris & Glenn on BBC London

"Still squeezing out sparks"

Imagine my panic when I read the headline on the BBC London site...

"... Squeezing out Sparks"?!!!

What on earth could have happened to the delightful Ron and Russell Mael?

I was about to launch an expedition to make sure that the electro-pioneers were safe and well, when I read the first paragraph:

" As English as they come and Londoners to boot: Lord Crowley meets songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook..."

Phew! That was a close one!

So imagine my delight to find that you can also watch Chris & Glenn chat to Lord Gary of Crowley (plus hear a bit of an acoustic take on 'Take Me I'm Yours').

The interview is from a couple of years back when Messrs Difford and Tilbrook were promoting their 'Song By Song' book at Borders.

I whooped a cry of happiness, put on my headphones and whipped out my copy Jim Drury's excellent 'Squeeze: Song By Song' book.

Lovely.

Read the article and watch Chris & Glenn chat to Gary Crowley here!

"Here's hoping they stay close and I wouldn't be too surprised if they end up working together in the future. And soon-ish too. Here's hoping anyway"- Gary Crowley

And they did! :0)

whet your appetites for some live shows

YouTube didn't let me embed the live version of Pulling Mussels. (Poo!) But here's a lip-sync from TOTP (I think?) back in the day to whet your appetites, and perhaps to scratch your head to:

it's not like that on the TV (is it?)

Squeeze bloggers seem to pop up all over the place --- not bad for that legendary band that no one has heard of. Check out We Stayed in By The Telly which so far features Squeeze appearances from the early to mid 1990s, about the Frank and Some Fantastic Place era.

tilbrook to be on top of the world?

Or pretty close there. Billboard reports that Glenn is set to attempt a climb on Mt. Everest, with Nick Harper no less, for a cancer charity:

The event also served as a precursor to another major trek for the Love Hope Strength Foundation. On Oct. 9, several other musicians -- including Squeeze's Glen Tilbrook and English songwriter Nick Harper -- will attempt to climb Mount Everest. The journey will be filmed for a VH1/MTV special and a BBC prime-time documentary.

Could that possibly be true? I checked out the Love, Hope, Strength Web site and they confirm that Glenn has confirmed to be one of 45 musicians who will make a 12-day trek to the base camp at Everest and then perform a concert there. How awesome. It will be filmed for VH-1 and BBC. According to that site, here are the acts:

Mike Peters – The Alarm
Jimmy Barnes
Billy Duffy – The Cult
Slim Jim Phantom – The Stray Cats
Dave Wakeling – English Beat / General Public
Glenn Tilbrook – Squeeze

Squeezeman turned TV host... Tilbrook?

I know this is old old news, but it appears this program may still be on the air on VH-1 Classic in the U.S. They list a show called BBC Crown Jewels which is clips from the TV music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test." It's supposedly hosted by Glenn Tilbrook of the "beloved UK band Squeeze." Can someone with good cable check it out and report back to let us know if it's true?

later with jools seen in HD in US?

I think this is old news, and only if you have Dish Network, but I did find that Rave HD (a high definition concert TV channel) has a trailer for Jools' show. It appears the show plays at 1 a.m. Fridays, so it is, indeed, later, or really really early, depending on how you look at it.

Tilbrook vs. Kershaw: Steel Cage Match

Well not quite, but in this "Incomplete" era-clip, a teevee host has our man Tilbrook compete with Nik "Wouldn't It Be Good" Kershaw in a busking competition on the streets of er... London, I presume. Who will win?
